Laugh and Learn at the Children’s Museum of South Carolina

Myrtle Beach has lots of great places for kids to have fun in the sun but few where they exercise their minds, That’s the role and the goal of the Children’s Museum of South Carolina.

Located downtown and adjacent to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, this 7,500 square foot facility features wall-to-wall activities for kids. More than 100 interactive exhibits and play stations make up this center that was designed to make learning fun for children and spark their imaginations by looking at the world a different way. From toddlers to pre-teens, the Children’s Museum of South Carolina has something for all ages in between, as well as for parents who like to join in the fun. Just don’t let them hear you say the dreaded “E” word (“educational”) and they may forget about water parks and the beach for a few hours, especially on a rainy day or a summer scorcher when it’s too hot to play.

But there’s plenty to do and see indoors at the Children’s Museum, particularly after undergoing recent renovations to add new attractions and exhibits focusing on nature and environmental issues. One live exhibit displays the many species of reptiles that are native to the state, and the Discover SC display runs guests through a tour of Palmetto State's natural history, including geology, geography and other information. A recycling center , a pedal-powered miniature city, the Puppet Playhouse and a gem-mining game are among the hands-on activities for the little ones.

Kids also get practical experience by using their imaginations in realistic work environments, such as a bank, a doctor’s office and a dentist’s chair. An art studio gives children the chance to express themselves on a blank canvas and produce a picture they can take home as a souvenir for their visit. There are various activities scheduled throughout the week, including the Tales for Tots story time sessions on Tuesdays and a full slate of games and fun activities on Fun Fridays.

The museum is open Monday through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 843-946-9469 or visit the website at www.cmsckids.org.
