Here are five great ways to get around Myrtle Beach:
- Bicycles: Myrtle Beach has become more bicycle friendly in recent years, adding bike lanes and paths along Ocean Boulevard and building new trails for those who like to get off the road. If you don't have the space to bring your own bikes from home, there are several rental places in the Myrtle Beach area. Beach Bike Shop on Broadway Street in the downtown district rents cruisers ($10 per day/$50 per week) and road bikes ($20 per day/$100 per week) complete with locks, helmets, baskets and maps of bike-friendly rides. Pedego Electric Bikes has an outlet at Market Common for those who love to ride without all the pedaling.
- Golf Carts: Golf carts aren't only for the golf course, especially in Myrtle Beach, where many locals and visitors get around town via E-Z-GOs. With seating for up to eight on the stretch models and plenty of storage space, visitors can load up their golf cart for the day and check out other parts of town. Licensed drivers can drive a golf cart on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph or lower — so Ocean Boulevard and other adjoining streets are OK to drive, and you may cross over Kings Highway and other major thoroughfares at traffic lights. With a little creativity and a map, you can go a lot of places in town on a golf cart. - Mopeds/Scooters: Even the most macho of men will swallow their pride and ride a moped or scooter at the beach. Not only are the mini-motorcycles perfect for tooling around town, you don't have to worry about friends from back home seeing you on one. There are an abundance of moped and scooter rental businesses in the downtown district, including BJ's Scooters and Myrtle Beach Mopeds on Kings Highway. Patrons receive a helmet and instructions on the rules of the road, which are similar to the laws for all other vehicle traffic. - Shuttles/Trolley: Coast RTA is the local rapid-transit authority, and the service is geared as much toward tourists as it is locals. The North Ocean Boulevard route picks up at the corner of Ocean Boulevard and 21st Avenue North, just outside the Breakers Resort property, at 52 minutes after the hour. Making a loop to the north end of town and back down to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, the route enables guests to reach a lot of points of local interest for as little as $1.50 per passenger. Discounts are available for children, seniors and the disabled.
- Taxis/Uber: While the streets of Myrtle Beach are literally crawling with taxi cabs, the arrival of Uber, an independent cab service, has opened the market and given visitors more options for local transportation.
