It’s football time again, and you don’t want to miss the big game while you are on vacation. Fortunately for football fans staying at Compass Cove, you don’t have to. Whether you are a college football or NFL fan, you can watch your home team while you are away from home at one of the many local sports bars, some of which are a short distance from the resort. Here are our top five places to root for your team while you are in Myrtle Beach:
Broadway Louie's: If you are a football fan who loves a stadium atmosphere, this is your place. Located in Broadway at the Beach's Celebrity Square district, this huge venue draws a rowdy crowd of folks who come to support their home team. The walls are covered with TVs so you are sure to find your game, and probably fellow fans and future friends. Good food and cold beer are plentiful, including $1.50 Bud Light all the time. Half of the bar is a large arcade featuring the latest high-tech video games and pool tables. This place gets packed on fall weekends so arrive before your game kicks off to find a comfy spot.
Bumstead's Pub: This downtown hot spot attracts big crowds on game days, especially South Carolina Gamecocks fans on Saturdays and Washington Redskins fans on Sundays. But this English pub draws all kinds – locals, tourists, college, NFL and a fair amount of futbol (soccer) fans. The best thing about catching a game at Bumstead's is the private booths with their own TVs, so you and your crew can watch whichever game or sport you choose. A wide selection of domestic and imported draft beers are available, and the food is famous, especially the piled-high sandwiches from the adjoining Dagwood's Deli.
King Street Grille: Make the short trip to Market Common for a fun place to watch the big game. This Charleston-based sports bar and grill serves as a popular restaurant known for its extensive menu as well as a hot spot for football fans. The outdoor patio deck allows patrons to get the full football experience by sitting in the fresh fall air and catching the action on a large-screen TV. A large mural of a stadium scene adds to the atmosphere. The indoor bar and dining area also have plenty of TVs and food that is far more sophisticated than the traditional sports-pub fare.
Ole Shillelagh Sports & Raw Bar: The newest sports bar in town has undergone an extreme makeover since it's last incarnation, Pop's Place, a popular local dive in the downtown district. Now it's an Irish-themed seafood shack and sports bar with 15 high-definition TVs and oysters on the half shell. The same cold beer and warm crowd of locals fill this small but bustling sports bar, which also has pool tables, a patio deck and occasional live music. Tucked away on a side street between Kings Highway and Family Kingdom, Ole Shillelagh is a good low-key place to catch a game.
Overtime Sports Café: This North Myrtle Beach establishment is the Taj Mahal of sports bars on the Grand Strand. Featuring two floors of wall to wall TVs and sports memorabilia, Overtime offers the ultimate environment and atmosphere for sports fans. The bar area has dozens of TVs tuned to different games and sports, but football dominates the air time in the fall. A sports museum features items from famous athletes, many of whom have hung out here over the years, and the menu includes everything from chicken wings and burgers to surf and turf.
