There are a lot of things we South Strand-ers consider major sources of pride.
There are the pristine beaches, the world-famous Lowcountry cuisine, the fascinating history, the gorgeous inlet.
And then there’s Brookgreen Gardens.
This is one of the biggest attractions in the Myrtle Beach area for a reason; the sprawling grounds are jaw-droopingly gorgeous and always a delight for the senses. It’s all-ages fun, it’s educational, it’s ever changing, but it’s also a relaxing and leisurely outing. And that’s a hard combination to come by.
Oh, and the best part? It’s a stone’s throw from your stay at Litchfield Beach & Golf.
Here are some can’t-miss upcoming events at Brookgreen Gardens.
1) Cool Summer Evenings: Yes, the days are hot down south, but with the setting sun comes some lovely nighttime temps. This is the perfect way to cap off a day of swimming in the ocean — relaxing with a concert, kids activities and/or dinner. Another fun way to go? An evening creek cruise that’s only $8 in addition to the $15 adult garden admission (save $1 by booking online). Cool Summer Evenings take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through August 7.
2) Exhibits: Get to Brookgreen before July 26 to see “Carolina Roots: Works by Sigmund Abeles and Grainger McKoy”and “Antebellum Waccamaw: Paintings and Drawings by Emily Esdaile Weston.” Both are fascinating looks at Lowcountry history and heritage and are free with garden admission.
3) Ongoing Programs: Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., join Brookgreen’s Vice President for Creative Education, Ron Daise, in a look at the language, culture, customs and history of the Gullah Geechee people, who were taken from West Africa as slaves. The program is free with garden admission and includes fascinating facts and trivia about the life of a people so instrumental in the formation of the Lowcountry legacy. Between August 8 and November 1, enjoy the National Sculpture Society 82nd Annual Awards Exhibition on display at Brookgreen. This juried exhibition sponsored by the oldest professional organization of sculptors will feature works by tried-and-true masters as well as promising newcomers. The People’s Choice Award is voted on by visitors to Brookgreen, so exercise your artistic right while you are there! Not to be missed is the classic Whispering Wings Butterfly Exhibit open now through October. Delight in the experience of being in an enclosed garden with hundreds of gorgeous and varied butterflies coasting all around you. See exotic tropical plants up close and dip into the Pupae Emergence Room to witness the miraculous transition from chrysalis to butterfly. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children on top of garden admission. It’s a recurring exhibit for a reason and is not to be missed.
4) Kids: Camp Brookgreen has long been sold out (there’s always next year!) but Brookgreen will sponsor Children’s Activity Days on August 6-8 and 13-15 for ages 4 through 12 between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Wall Lowcountry Learning Lab 1. Take part in crafts and make-and-take activities, all free with garden admission. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
And then just like that, it’s fall again (<heaving sob>).
