There was a time when flying into Myrtle Beach meant boarding a puddle-jumper from neighboring hubs like Atlanta and Charlotte to land at one of only four gates. But just as the Grand Strand has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, so too has the Myrtle Beach International Airport.
After undergoing a $118 million renovation to add a new terminal to the existing facility, the new and improved Myrtle Beach International Airport was unveiled in the spring of 2015. It didn't take very long for new airlines and travelers to take notice, with now a total of eight airlines offering direct flights from dozens of cities to America's most popular family vacation destination.
The addition of new roads, including the expansion of Harrelson Boulevard, more parking and other upgrades have made it even more convenient to leave the family car at home and travel to Myrtle Beach by air. The affordable airfare rates and increased options for flights give guests a great excuse to fly to the Grand Strand. Here are eight airlines to check for service to and from Myrtle Beach:
- Allegiant Air: This discount airline provides non-stop service from more than 30 markets to Myrtle Beach, including Indianapolis, Allentown (PA), Pittsburgh and Cleveland, Cincinnati, Clarksburg (WV), Charleston (WV), Lexington (KY), and Syracuse (NY), with connecting flights from cities throughout the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard.
- American: This major airline offers service from hubs in Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. If you are coming from a smaller airport, there's a good chance you will connect via one of these short and convenient flights.
- Delta: This airline provides direct service to New York's La Guardia Airport, making it a popular flight for folks traveling to the Grand Strand via the Big Apple. Direct service from Atlanta also carries a large number of visitors from the South.
- Spirit: Offering service to the western half of the country via Dallas, Spirit's main market is the Northeast, including direct flights from Newark, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Atlantic City, and the Midwest, with non-stop service to major hubs in Cleveland, Detroit and Pittsburgh, as well as smaller airports in Charleston (WV), Niagara Falls and Plattsburgh (NY).
- United: This major airline offers two direct flights to Myrtle Beach and both are major markets – Newark in the Greater New York area and Chicago. This is one of Myrtle Beach’s primary connections for visitors from the other side of the Mississippi River.
- ViaAir: This regional airline provides limited non-stop service from Beckley (WV) and a short shot from Charlotte (NC). The newcomer plans to add more flights to small markets in the future.
- WestJet and Porter Airlines: These two Canadian airlines provide international, non-stop service to Myrtle Beach via Toronto. Snowbirds love this straight shot to their winter retreat at Long Bay, the resort of choice from our neighbors to the north.
