Spend National Beach Day on the Grand Strand

Breathtaking Views

Aug. 30 is National Beach Day, and it’s the perfect time to get that late-summer getaway to Myrtle Beach.

This holiday has existed only since 2014 – which makes us wonder, why’d they wait so long?

It’s not as though people need reminders to appreciate a place as awesome as Myrtle Beach. And it really can’t be confined to a single day. However, it’s a great reminder that we need to take care of our beautiful beaches, while we’re there and when we head home. Use this holiday to remember your role in leaving behind nothing but your footprints.

Don’t forget the sunscreen. Also, have fun – seize the day in your favorite beach getaway and commemorate the end of summer. Have that Myrtle Beach bash – and just remember to leave it just as gorgeous as it was when you got here!

7 ways to have a perfect beach day

1. Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the ocean

First, check on the time for sunrise. Get out about 20 minutes before. Also, check your weather app. A rainy morning changes everything. The light and colors are spectacular at sunrise, so whether you’re intent on capturing it in a picture or just savoring the moment, it’s a time to enjoy.

2. Take a morning walk down the beach

Rise and shine – it’s beach walking time! There’s something magical about the coast at dawn. The way the sunrays play on the water and sand, the sea birds congregating by shallow pools and gliding over the ocean.

3. Bring a ball and play catch on the beach

Whether it’s a ball and glove, a football, or even a soccer ball to kick around, it’s fun to loosen up for a bit of catch or kick in Myrtle Beach. If you have kids and a softer ball, play ball tag in the surf. Visit one of the many surf shops on The Strand for other beach ball games.

4. Search for seashells and shark teeth

Bring a zip-top sandwich bag for your finds. You can find cool shells in Myrtle Beach, including arks, augers, cockies, coquina, jingles, olive shells, pen shells, slipper shells, and whelks. Search in the shell beds at low tide.

5. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach

It’s important to know open containers of alcohol are not permitted in Myrtle Beach. Cold-cut sandwiches are great, but be sure to keep your food at or below 40 degrees. Especially if you’re packing for kids, keep it simple: Dippable veggies, cheese, crackers, and juice boxes.

6. Go fishing off the beach

You don’t need a South Carolina fishing license to fish off a pier, but you do need one to fish off the shore. Try the 2nd Avenue Fishing pier for plenty of bites and non-stop action. Catch your share of red drum and speckled trout by going out with Myrtle Beach Guide Service.

7. Enjoy a glass of wine from your balcony as the sun sets

The perfect way to end National Beach Day. We suggest a pinot grigio or rose. Like the famous quote says: “Life does not come with instructions on how to live, but it does come with trees, sunsets, smiles, and laughter, so enjoy your day.”
